Set up customer privacy
As a Genstore merchant, it’s crucial to protect customer privacy and comply with applicable privacy laws. To help you effectively manage privacy settings and ensure compliance and transparency, you can customize Customer privacy settings in the Genstore admin. Note: Since privacy laws and regulations vary by region, you can customize privacy settings for different countries and regions through the Customer privacy settings.
TIP
This section provides general information on privacy compliance for merchants and is intended for reference only. It does not constitute legal advice.
Merchants are responsible for their own compliance and should consult legal advisors to determine the impact of relevant laws in their region and the regions they sell to. To use the Genstore platform for selling, you must comply with applicable laws, Genstore's terms of service, and any other relevant policies.
Create and manage privacy policy
A privacy policy is a legal document that outlines how a business collects, uses, stores, and protects the personal information of its customers or website visitors.
When setting up a new store, the system will default to enabling the Genstore recommended privacy policy text. However, you can modify or manually draft your own privacy policy as needed.
Steps:
- In the Genstore admin, go to Settings -> Customer privacy.
- Click Privacy policy.
- Modify or manually draft the privacy policy.
- Click Confirm.
Add a cookie banner
A cookie banner is a notice on your website informing visitors about data collection and tracking activities and requesting their consent. You must publish your privacy policy first to enable the cookie consent banner.
When setting up a new store, the system will automatically generate the Genstore recommended cookie banner, including its region and content settings. You can modify the region settings or manually draft the cookie banner content as needed.
Steps:
- In the Genstore backend, go to Settings -> Customer privacy.
- Click Cookie banner.
- In the Region and content section, configure the settings:
- Click Edit under the Region section, choose the region where the cookie banner should appear, and click Save.
- Click Edit under the Content section, make changes, and click Save.
- Adjust the appearance of the cookie banner (including color and preferences) to align with your store’s branding, then click Save.
- In the Position section, select the position for the banner, then click Save.
- Optional: Click View to preview the cookie banner on your store.
Add a data sale opt-out page
The data sale opt-out page is a dedicated page that allows visitors to opt out of having their personal data sold or shared with third parties, giving customers control over how their information is used and distributed. This feature is automatically activated when the Global Privacy Control (GPC) header is present.
When setting up a new store, the system will default to generating the data sale opt-out page. You can modify or manually draft the data sale opt-out page as needed.
Steps:
- In the Genstore admin, go to Settings -> Customer privacy.
- Click Data sale opt-out page.
- In the Region and content section, configure the settings:
- Click Edit under the Region section, choose the region where the opt-out page should appear, and click Save.
- Click Edit under the Content section, make changes, and click Save.
- In the Navigation section, select the location for the data sale opt-out page in your store menu, then click Save.
Understand the impact of privacy settings
Enabling the cookie banner and data sale opt-out functionality may affect data collection:
- Regions with configured cookie banners: Data collection for non-essential data can only occur with consent, which may reduce the data available for analytics, marketing, and personalization settings. For example, this reduction might manifest as a decrease in visits and other metrics (including conversion rates) that rely on visit data. This applies to regions that require opt-in consent for data collection, such as the EEA and the UK.
- Regions without configured cookie banners: Data can be collected without the need for consent. This applies to regions that do not require opt-in consent for data collection, such as the US.
